A traditional Japanese apron, the maekake has become an emblem of the craftsmen and tradesmen who have been wearing them since the 15th century. This thick cotton apron is tied around the hips to protect clothing from soiling. The thick belt is also said to help protect the lumbar region. Its orange and white color is reminiscent of koi kohaku, considered a good-luck charm in Japan. This maekake apron is decorated with a daruma, a symbol of perseverance and success.
